Momofuku and planning

I met up with my friend the birthday girl on Tuesday night at Momofuku Ssam Bar. I partly wanted to finish planning the dinner party but mostly wanted to try the dinner menu at Ssam which I have been reading so much about. I wish I could have made it before the two star NYTimes review but…

We met up at 845 on what was a rather damp and ugly Tuesday night and were told that the wait for two would be an hour. AN HOUR! We decided to get a couple of beers and wait. We only ended up waiting for about 45 minutes for what turned out to be a fantastic meal. I don’t have the time or the energy to write a review now (I will eat there again soon and then probably write one) but I will say that everything I had was excellent and that our hipsterish waiter was more than helpful in answering any questions we had about the menu.

Momofuku is a great place to go for dinner with people who are open minded about food and don’t mind eating ‘strange parts of animals’; I really enjoyed the sweetbreads, but my favorite dish was the warm veal head terrine. I can’t wait to go back and try out several of the other interesting items on the menu.

As for the dinner party planning…

Once the menu was set, we had to work on a list of invitees. Unfortunately, we don’t have a definite list yet, but it looks like there will be between 8 and 13 people. We’ll know by Thursday.

Luckily I was able to delegate the Italian meat and cheese shopping to my friend. Now I can get most of the other groceries at Citarella on Friday night and have enough time cooking on Saturday won't be incredibly stressful.

I’ve also decided to make the chocolate terrine ahead of time. I found what looks to be a really great chocolate terrine recipe (although maybe a little complicated) on this blog. It also has other excellent looking desserts for those daring enough to try them. I don’t usually follow recipes but I’m a little clueless at times when it comes to dessert.

That’s it for now, will know more about dinner by Thursday night hopefully.

Sorry for writing about a topic that might not be interesting to people other than me and those directly involved. I promise it will get better once I post the recipes and take some pictures…

Here are a couple of links that I’ve enjoyed over the past couple of days.

I was right! PrimeTime Tables is the beginning of an awful awful trend.

A rather strange review this week by Frank Bruni. I would pay money to see him awkwardly speaking to strippers.

There seems to be a lot written about steak this week. Bruni’s blog has an entry on aging steaks and the WSJ has this article on how to cook a perfect steak.

This man was tricked into thinking that Tattoos are not permanent

Finally, Will Goldfarb’s website. He is the head chef at Room 4 Dessert a rather tasty dessert bar with some strange names and tasty food.
