One reason why I love eating is because it affords you time to spend with people. I love sharing meals with family, new friends, old friends, strangers, and friends that I don’t see very often. Dining at a restaurant or at a home gives us an occasion to meet and spend time with people we care about. Whether the focus of the meal is the food or something completely different, meals bring us together.
I had a wonderful lunch at Blaue Gans with my former kindergarten teacher yesterday. I hadn’t seen her in several years and it was great to catch up. While we had so much to catch up on, the food was hard to ignore.
Blaue Gans has an excellent 20 dollar prix fixe lunch, featuring three courses and two options for each course. You can choose to go light with a crisp red cabbage salad, followed by a pleasantly soft but crisp skinned brook trout. You can also have a heavier lunch starting with a savory, meaty beef goulash with a pleasantly salty quality followed by the classic Austrian wiener schnitzel, bathed in a rich cream sauce. To finish the meal they offer a surprisingly light slice of chocolate cake with just enough ‘schlag’ (whipped cream) so that no bite of cake goes schlagless. The funky walls adorned with various posters and large windows in the front of the restaurant bathe the restaurant in a pleasant light, making the restaurant a charming and affordable place to find a decent lunch.
And…In the race for my belly, the gym is catching up to the restaurants, now only trailing by a half hour (4.5 to 4.) We still have more than a week to go….
This one’s for you Josh. Actually, despite the length, this New Yorker article, by Bill Buford (author of Heat) provides a very interesting perspective on Gordon Ramsay. From what I’ve read, Buford is truly gifted at giving us a peek inside the heads of restaurant world giants.
For fun…To deep fry? Or not to deep fry?
