Looking at food as a young New Yorker

Busy Busy Busy

I’ve been so busy lately I’ve barely had time to spend lots of time on food. I’ve been reading The Omnivore’s Dilemma when I have some spare time and it has certainly affected the way I view the groceries I buy. When possible I am trying to buy cook and eat locally. Here is a picture of a dinner I cooked on Sunday with groceries purchased solely at the green market. It’s a roasted duck leg with pan roasted salsify, apples, buckwheat greens and farmer’s market quince cherry chutney.

Now that I have a couple of free nights this week I’ll be able to spend a little more time focusing on next Saturday’s dinner party. I’m still trying to decide whether I’m talking myself into, or out of adding a foie gras course. It’s something I’ve never cooked before and I would love the challenge. In terms of cruelty to animals…I eat chicken and I eat beef and I eat pork, and from what I’m reading in my current book (which in no way advocates foie gras) it seems that most of the chickens pigs and cattle that we eat live lives much worse than the ducks that are fattened for foie gras. My current stance is that as long as I, or anyone for that matter eats meat purchased at grocery stores, or stores such as Whole Foods are being incredibly hypocritical when they oppose foie gras with the cruelty defense. I could write more about this but I’d have to do a little more research first.

My friend e-mailed me this. It looks like an amazing event.

An interesting article on the trend of small plates with a minor focus on the business aspect of it.
