When I woke up Sunday morning after a very, very long St. Patrick’s day, I walked to the living room and said hello to our guests. Shortly after, one guest asked if he could go make some tea. The next thing I know, smoke is pouring out of the kitchen and there is a fire on top of the burners. If you’re thinking that boiling water to make tea is one of the safest things you can do in your kitchen, you are very wrong.
Apparently our house guest placed our electric teapot, the one with the hard plastic bottom, directly on top of the burner. Shortly after the plastic, melted, caught fire, and we were left with a sticky cleaning job and an apartment that smelled like burnt plastic for the rest of the weekend.
To make light of the situation, (you never want to make your guests feel bad) I plated the results of the first wave of cleaning:
I know, I'm a complete dork for taking a picture of burnt plastic. I did think it was interesting to look at though.
Here is also a picture of a salad I made for dinner Sunday night (couldn’t use the burners for cooking really.) It consists of frisee and baby Boston lettuce, endives, ma
This salad was relatively easy to assemble and tasted great. I would post a recipe, but I feel that listing the ingredients might be enough to let you recreate it. The best part was definitely the strawberries, macerated in Grand Marnier, and a little bit of water. The resulting Grand Marnier/strawberry water also makes a great after dinner palate cleanser.
I also made seared tuna with bananas, creamed bok choy, and toasted macadamias for dinner last night. I really enjoy the combination of the macadamias, banana and tuna, a combination of flavors and textures that work really well together.
